Rock Her Pepper - 23

What is the origin of your derby name and/or number?

Dr. Pepper is my drink of choice, and there are 23 flavors in it.

What teams(s) have you played with?

Enid Roller Girls, Twin City Roller Derby, Team Louisiana

How/when did you discover derby?

We were walking around downtown Enid (Okla.) during a First Friday back in 2015 and I saw a booth for the local roller derby team. We had just moved there from a big city and I needed to find something to do in a small town, so I figured why not?? I grew up skating and even raced against Apollo Anton Ohno when we were kids at our local rink. I came in a very far second place!

How has derby impacted your life?

It has opened me up in ways I never thought possible. I have made the best of friends who have become family. My kids are proud of me. My husband brags about me. I’ve found something that has become an outlet for me to be myself and not just a military spouse or a special needs mom.

What derby positions do you enjoy playing?

I don’t know if I can say I enjoy it but I’m pretty good as a jammer.

Do you have a personal goal for this year?

I want to lead this team to success with it being our first year ranked in WFTDA. I also want to become stronger as a blocker and maybe, just maybe, go a full game without getting hurt.

What advice do you have for new skaters?

It’s ok to fall. We all do it. Even the best skaters fall. Once you fall, the only direction you can go is up! Oh, and never skimp on knee pads!

What are your non-derby hobbies?

Playing around on Adobe software to keep my graphic design skills up. I love creating memes for people’s birthdays.

Day job?

I cart around three tiny humans and make sure they’re fed, bathed and healthy, hopefully all on the same day!

Final thoughts ...

Once you discover roller derby, you will realize that it is EVERYWHERE!!!
