BethleHammer - 428
What is the origin of your derby name and/or number?
Long story short, in high school I was asked what Beth was short for ... Nothing. Not Bethany, not Elizabeth. Friends decided it should be short for Bethlehem. (Yeah, teenagers are so witty.) Enter Roller Derby. Hem = Hammer. I wanted something my kids could shout out, too. Their birthdays make up my number.
What teams(s) have you played with?
Ring City Roller Girls (Kinston/New Bern, NC), Mojave Rattle Skaters (Now Hi-Desert Roller Derby in Yucca Valley, CA) and the Twin City Knockers (now known as Twin City Roller Derby, right here in Shreveport/Bossier City, LA)
How/when did you discover derby?
I was getting a tattoo and the artist was telling me about a Roller Derby Team she was playing with. I watched one game and bought skates and gear within a week!
How has derby impacted your life?
Since finding Roller Derby, I have moved across the US a few times and Derby has immediately given me a friend/group upon arrival. I love that I can vacation in a new city or state, reach out and get local recommendations and offer the same for people visiting our area.
What derby positions do you enjoy playing?
I loved being a pivot; but right now Coaching is pretty rad, too! I LOVE that I can still be on skates and participate with the Team!
Do you have a personal goal for this year?
I'll hit a milestone birthday in October and my goal is to go into my 40s as strong and as healthy as I can! I have teamed up with another TCRD Skater and we have both a 10K and a Half Marathon that we're doing this year - Both bucket list items for me! As far as Roller Derby? I hope to show others in our community that there is no, "one size/age/background fits all" for Derby! We are a TEAM filled with awesome people who want to be there, excel in our sport and give back to our town!
What advice do you have for new skaters?
Don't rush! This sport isn't going anywhere! In fact, it's growing every year! Get comfortable in your skates and gear and progress at your pace! Be a part of your team, too! Whether it's getting partnered up with someone new at practice or accepting an invite to get lunch, do it!
What are your non-derby hobbies?
My favorite quote right now is, "I can't. My kid has practice, a game... or something!" My hobbies include being a Soccer Mom, all the normal "family" stuff, slinging Soap at Comic Cons and watching way too much TV too late at night!
What is your day job?
I spend other people's money (accounts payable) and co-manage events in our local area with my husband! Go check out InstaGraham Events! (Yep, shameless plug!)
Final thoughts ...
I'm a CA transplant living here in LA. I can use "Dude, Rad and Y'all" in the same sentence and I'm not ashamed one bit! In all seriousness, if you've read this far and your interested in Roller Derby, no matter your athletic level (or lack there of), age, experience, etc ... Come on out! We really do have a space for everyone!
